Every 6-8 months I find myself doing a “Social Media Clean Up.” When I begin to see posts on my timelines that don’t make me happy, I am quick to hit the unfollow button; then that leads to another unfollow and another. I don’t do this out of anger; I do this to simply weed out negativity in my life. I spend so much of my time on my phone scrolling through social media, so shouldn’t I make it enjoyable for myself? And you should too!
It’s Okay to Unfollow People!
People are not waiting around to see who unfollows them and they certainly aren’t going to begrudge you. If they do, you need to reevaluate some things! Most of the time when I go on an unfollowing frenzy, it’s usually people I don’t even know. You would think after so long I would learn not to follow people I don’t know?! Sometimes it is so easy to see a cute post and follow the page, not thinking that was going to be the only cute post they would share!
Isn’t it funny that we live in a world where we are “friends” with people online and maybe never speak or see them in person? Yet, we are so concerned about “un-friending” them. For a while, I didn’t want to unfollow people for the simple fact that I have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). I didn’t want to miss any of the action. I just knew that as soon as I clicked the unfriend button, something big would happen and I would be stuck with “This Account is Private,” and I could not bear to send another request.
Don’t Waste Your Time Scrolling
Instagram is easily the most used social media app on my phone, although it does the most damage to my confidence. Like most days, I scroll through looking at pictures of my friends, strangers, musicians, models, and random funny posts. Then I realized that half of the pictures I saw were making me feel bad about myself. The pictures of the “perfect” models with the “perfect” bodies that were getting thousands, even millions, of ‘likes’ and I am struggling to get 100 ‘likes’ on a selfie I thought was cute.
So what did I do? I began to unfollow accounts that made me feel bad about myself. Such as, models, actresses, celebrities and random “InstaFamous” women. Now, do not take this the wrong way. I believe every woman is beautiful in their own way and I am not knocking the women who are pretty much unicorns to the average woman. I am sure it was not their intentions to make me feel the way that I do, but I know personally it was not helping my self-esteem. I simply need to surround myself with posts that make me feel more confident.
While I was on my unfollowing spree, I also began to unfollow silly pages that were just too crude. I unfollowed political pages and pages of people I don’t even know. So many posts were not attributing anything to my daily life. I felt that if someone’s post did not affect me positively or affect me at all, I didn’t need to waste my time scrolling.
Follow What Brings You Joy
That is when I began to think about, what did I want to see on my social media? What was worth hours of my time scrolling through? So I made a list of my likes, joys and needs. I love turtles, so I followed turtle Instagram accounts. I find joy in traveling, so I followed travel pages. I could use a confidence boost, so I followed women who I felt empowered me to be me.
This did take some time to search through. On any social media platform there is an option to search, and that is exactly where I went. I searched for confidence pages, healthy recipes, musicians that I liked. Something personally for me - something that worked, was to follow fashion pages and fitness pages that had women my size. It is so much easier for me to watch workout videos if I can relate to the person.
It didn’t take long for me to notice what a difference it made to scroll through social media and enjoy seeing the posts that were shared. There are videos now on my timeline of workouts that I feel confident to try. I see music videos from my favorite music artists and poems from my favorite poets. One of the fun things I found within this process is that there are things out there that I didn’t even know that I liked! I now follow pages that excite me and encourage me to try new things.
So now it is your turn! I encourage you to take some of your scrolling time to weed out the negativity from your social media. Be picky with who and what you follow and don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. I will give you a warning that once this process starts it is hard to stop! I find myself every day looking for a new positive page to follow. This is something you will appreciate taking the time to do.
